Emergentism holds that when physical parts are organized into a sufficiently complex whole, genuinely new properties can appear, properties not possessed by any part in isolation and not derivable, even in principle, from the laws governing the parts taken separately, while nothing beyond the physical parts and their organization actually exists. C.D. Broad gave the position its classic twentieth century statement, using the example of chemical properties like the liquidity of water, which he argued could not have been predicted from the properties of hydrogen and oxygen alone before it was observed. Reductive physicalists reject the claim that any property is genuinely unpredictable in principle rather than merely unpredictable given current knowledge. The position matters for the philosophy of mind specifically because it offers a way to treat consciousness as a real, new kind of property arising from brain complexity without positing any non-physical substance to carry it.

Applied to mind, emergentism holds that consciousness is a similarly genuine novelty, arising once neurons are organized with sufficient complexity, that is not merely a summary description of neural activity but a new kind of fact about the system as a whole, irreducible to, though fully dependent on and produced by, its physical base. This is meant to thread a needle between physicalism, which many emergentists worried left consciousness looking like nothing more than a redundant relabeling of brain activity, and dualism, which posits an entirely separate substance emergentists considered unnecessary and unparsimonious. The position's chief vulnerability is that later chemistry did, in fact, manage to explain liquidity from molecular properties after all, undermining Broad's own showcase example and leaving open the possibility that consciousness, too, will eventually turn out to be predictable in principle from sufficiently detailed neuroscience, exactly the outcome strong emergentism denies is possible.

The Position Most Contemporary Scientists Reach for by Default

Emergentism has aged into something close to the default, if often loosely stated, position of working neuroscientists and cognitive scientists, who routinely describe consciousness, or mind, as emerging from brain complexity without committing themselves to Broad's stronger, more precise claim that this emergence is unpredictable even in principle; this weaker, more common usage is sometimes distinguished as weak emergence, contrasted with the strong emergence Broad and his contemporaries actually defended.

In the mind-body debate specifically, emergentism sits close to epiphenomenalism in some formulations, since an emergent mental property might still be denied any causal power of its own over the physical base that produced it, while other emergentists insist on downward causation, mental properties genuinely acting back on the physical parts from which they arose, a stronger and more contested claim. The position's appeal outside strict analytic philosophy of mind is broad: it offers a way to speak of a genuinely new, higher-order reality, whether mind, society, or life itself, arising from physical process without either denying physicalism or positing an immaterial soul, which is exactly why it recurs across process theology and systems biology as much as in philosophy of mind proper.
