Personal Identity As Substance

Personal identity as substance holds that a person continues to exist over time because a single underlying substance, a soul or an enduring self, persists, and that this persistence is what genuinely makes someone the same person, whether or not memory or any other psychological connection links their earlier and later states. Descartes assumed a version of the position throughout his dualism, treating the soul as a simple, indivisible substance whose persistence through time is guaranteed by its very simplicity, since a thing with no parts has nothing that could come apart or be lost. Thomas Reid pressed the strongest direct objection to Locke's rival memory-based theory from within the substance tradition, arguing memory could not be what identity consists in without generating outright contradictions. Continuity theorists such as Locke and Parfit reject the substance criterion, and what is at stake is whether identity is a further, deeper fact over and above psychological connectedness, one many doctrines of an immortal soul require in order to make sense of a person surviving total memory loss, deep sleep, or bodily death intact.

A Self That Does Not Depend on Remembering Itself

The substance theory's core intuition is that a person is not, at bottom, a bundle or chain of psychological states linked by memory, but a single persisting thing, a soul or self, which those states belong to and which continues to exist across gaps, whether the dreamless gap of deep sleep, the discontinuity of amnesia, or, on many religious versions, the far larger gap of bodily death; on this view, a person who wakes with no memory of yesterday has not become a new person, because the substance underlying both days' experiences is one and the same, whatever has happened to the memories attached to it.

Thomas Reid's classic objection to Locke's rival memory theory, sometimes called the brave officer paradox, presses exactly this point: imagine an old general who remembers, as a middle-aged officer, a brave act he performed as a young soldier, but who has, by old age, entirely forgotten that youthful act itself, even though the middle-aged officer still remembered it; Locke's criterion, applied strictly, seems to yield the contradictory result that the general both is and is not the same person as the young soldier, identical to the middle-aged officer, who was identical to the young soldier, and yet not identical to the young soldier directly, since identity, unlike memory-connection, should be transitive and admit of no such contradiction. Substance theorists take this as decisive evidence that some further fact, a persisting substance underlying and unifying the changing memories, must be doing the real work of identity that memory alone cannot do on its own.

The Position Most Doctrines of the Soul Actually Need

Substance theory is closer to what most religious doctrines of an immortal soul or an enduring self actually require than continuity theory is, since a doctrine of resurrection or rebirth generally wants to say that the very same person, not merely someone psychologically continuous with them, persists through death and beyond, including through the total discontinuity of memory that death, on most such doctrines, involves; this is precisely why substance-based accounts of the soul have historically been the default in traditions asserting personal survival, even where the philosophical vocabulary of substance and accident was never explicitly invoked.

The theory's own persistent weakness is less logical than epistemic: a substance that can, in principle, persist through total psychological discontinuity is, by the same token, extremely difficult to verify or even to make sense of empirically, since nothing observable, no memory, no character trait, no bodily continuity, is strictly required by the theory to track it, leading critics to charge that positing such a substance explains identity only by placing it beyond any possible evidence either way. Continuity theorists reply that this is exactly the theory's problem rather than its virtue, an unfalsifiable posit standing in for a genuine explanation, while substance theorists answer that some questions, including whether the person who wakes up tomorrow is really you, are simply not the kind of question empirical evidence alone was ever going to settle.

Anatta denies that any persisting self can be found among the five aggregates; substance theory affirms exactly such a persisting self.

Continuity theory locates personal identity in an unbroken chain of psychological connection; substance theory locates it in a persisting soul or self, present whether or not memory connects its states.
