The burning bush. The Hebrew ehyeh asher ehyeh is genuinely contested: the verb is imperfect and can be rendered 'I am what I am', 'I will be what I will be', or 'I cause to be what I cause to be'. The ASV's I AM THAT I AM follows the Greek tradition; the future rendering is at least as defensible and changes the theology.
