A light, stiff, steel-grey metal, unusual for being both very rigid and nearly transparent to X-rays, which is why it forms the windows of X-ray tubes and the mirrors of infrared space telescopes. It occurs chiefly in beryl, the mineral that in gem quality is emerald and aquamarine, and it was recognised as a distinct earth by Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin in 1798 during his analysis of beryl and emerald; Friedrich Wohler and Antoine Bussy isolated the metal independently in 1828. Its dust is severely toxic to the lungs. Being an eighteenth-century discovery, it has no place in classical alchemy.

Overview
Beryllium was identified in 1798 by Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin, who found a new earth common to both beryl and emerald; the metal was isolated independently in 1828 by Friedrich Wohler and Antoine Bussy. Its name derives from beryl, the gemstone (Greek beryllos), the mineral in which it hides. For much of the nineteenth century it bore an alternative name, glucinium, from the Greek glykys, sweet, because its salts taste sweet, a property no longer tested for since beryllium and its compounds are severely toxic. It is a light, stiff, steel-grey metal transparent to X-rays.
Rare in the crust and difficult to work, it is used in springy copper-beryllium alloys, in aerospace parts and in the windows of X-ray tubes, but its dust and fumes are hazardous, causing the chronic lung disease known as berylliosis. Beryllium played a pivotal role in nuclear physics: bombarded with alpha particles in 1932, it released a neutral radiation that James Chadwick identified as the neutron, the discovery that completed the basic model of the atomic nucleus. The same reaction later made beryllium the standard neutron-source material paired with radioactive elements such as radium and polonium, and beryllium components still serve as neutron reflectors in nuclear reactors and weapons.
Name and the Gemstones
The element's story is bound to precious stone. Emerald and aquamarine are both gem varieties of beryl, coloured by trace impurities but built on beryllium's framework, so the lore of these stones, prized since antiquity in Egypt and the Near East, is in a literal sense the cultural history of beryllium long before anyone knew the metal existed. The discarded name glucinium preserves a second thread: the sweet, dangerous taste that first drew chemists' attention. Beryllium has no alchemical tradition of its own, being an eighteenth-century discovery, but through beryl and emerald it inherits one of the oldest bodies of gemstone symbolism.
Aquamarine takes its own name from the Latin aqua marina, seawater, and was carried by sailors as a talisman believed to calm waters and guarantee safe passage, while medieval lapidaries credited it with restoring lost love and curing ailments of the eye. Emerald's lore runs deeper still: Cleopatra is said to have mined emeralds in Egypt's Eastern Desert, the stone was associated with Venus and fertility in Roman tradition, and later Christian writers linked its green to hope and the renewal of spring. Morganite (pink) and heliodor (golden yellow) are further beryl varieties, extending beryllium's gemstone family well past its two most famous members.
