Made at the GSI laboratory in Darmstadt on 9 November 1994 by Sigurd Hofmann, Peter Armbruster, Gottfried Munzenberg and colleagues, by firing nickel at lead, and named for the city. Earlier claims from Dubna and Berkeley were not accepted. It is a synthetic element with no natural occurrence and no known application; its longest-lived isotope survives a matter of seconds. Calculation suggests it should resemble platinum, but no chemistry has been performed on it. There is no tradition attached to it, alchemical or otherwise, and there cannot be one.

Overview
Darmstadtium was first created in 1994 at the GSI laboratory in Darmstadt, Germany, by a team led by Sigurd Hofmann, by fusing lead and nickel nuclei. It was named after Darmstadt, the city that hosts the laboratory where it and several neighbouring elements were made. Darmstadtium is an intensely radioactive synthetic metal, known only from a few atoms lasting fractions of a second. Made by fusing lead and nickel nuclei, it has no known chemistry and exists only long enough to register its radioactive decay, so that its properties are inferred from theory and from its position beneath platinum in the table.
Hofmann's team detected darmstadtium from a single atom in November 1994, fusing a lead-208 target with a beam of nickel-62 ions in an experiment that took a full week of continuous accelerator operation to register that one confirmed event, a ratio of effort to result that captures just how far element-hunting had moved from Cronstedt's era of extracting nickel by the pound. Sitting directly beneath platinum in the periodic table, darmstadtium is theoretically expected to share some of platinum's noble, corrosion-resistant character, though no experiment has yet gathered enough atoms to test the prediction directly.
Named for the City That Made It
Darmstadtium honours the German city of Darmstadt, home of the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, one of the small handful of laboratories worldwide capable of creating superheavy elements; the institute produced elements 107 through 112, and darmstadtium sits at the heart of that run. Naming an element directly for its birthplace, as with dubnium and hassium, acknowledges how completely these elements are creatures of the specific machines that make them, existing nowhere else in the universe within human reach.
Darmstadtium has no ancient, mythological or alchemical tradition, being a synthetic element of the 1990s with no natural occurrence and no chemistry beyond the moment of its creation; its name is a straightforward tribute to the place and the people whose painstaking accelerator work brought it, briefly, into being. In barely fifteen years, from bohrium in 1981 to copernicium in 1996, the Darmstadt laboratory confirmed six consecutive new elements, an unmatched run of productivity for a single institution that reshaped an entire stretch of the periodic table within one generation of researchers. No other laboratory in the world has matched that particular streak of consecutive element discoveries before or since.
