Named for Dubna, the Russian town whose Joint Institute for Nuclear Research is one of the two laboratories that claimed it: Dubna in 1968, Berkeley in 1970. Berkeley proposed hahnium and used the name for years; Dubna proposed nielsbohrium. The international commission settled the whole run of disputed elements in 1997 with a compromise in which Berkeley's rutherfordium was accepted for 104 and Dubna's claim on 105 was recognised in the name. It is one of the clearest cases in science of a name recording a negotiation rather than a fact.

Overview
Dubnium, like its neighbour rutherfordium, was the subject of competing discovery claims from Dubna and Berkeley in the 1960s and 1970s, and of a long naming dispute. The compromise name adopted in 1997 honours Dubna, the Russian town whose Joint Institute for Nuclear Research had played a leading part in creating the heaviest elements. Dubnium is an intensely radioactive synthetic metal, studied only in fleeting traces. Its longest-lived isotope survives about a day, and it is made only a few atoms at a time; chemical experiments on those atoms place it, as expected, alongside tantalum and niobium in group five, though relativistic effects lend its behaviour some surprises.
The rival Dubna and Berkeley teams had in fact used different nuclear reactions to reach element 105, Dubna fusing americium with neon ions and Berkeley bombarding californium with nitrogen ions, a genuine methodological difference that made comparing and verifying each other's results unusually difficult and contributed directly to the long dispute over who could rightfully claim priority. Modern production techniques have since converged on more reliable methods, though dubnium remains, like its neighbours, obtainable only a handful of atoms at a time.
Named for a Laboratory Town
Dubnium's name is part of the settlement that ended the Transfermium Wars. During the dispute the element had borne several proposed names, including hahnium, after the chemist Otto Hahn, used for a time in the West, and nielsbohrium; the final compromise gave element 105 to Dubna, acknowledging the Soviet and Russian laboratory's central role in the discovery of the superheavy elements, while other contested names were redistributed among neighbouring elements.
Dubnium thus honours not a person but the very institute that vied with Berkeley to make and name these elements, a diplomatic resolution written into the periodic table itself. It has no ancient or esoteric tradition, being a synthetic element; its name records the compromise that finally shared out the credit for the heaviest elements between the Cold War rivals. Both hahnium and nielsbohrium, once seriously proposed for element 105, were retired entirely rather than reassigned elsewhere once the 1997 compromise took effect, so unlike some other disputed names of the era they survive today only in older textbooks and papers rather than attached to any other place in the modern periodic table. Dubna's Joint Institute for Nuclear Research remains, alongside Berkeley and Darmstadt, one of only a handful of laboratories on Earth ever to have discovered and named a chemical element outright.
