Named for the indigo line in its spectrum, by which Ferdinand Reich and Hieronymous Theodor Richter found it in 1863 in Saxon zinc ore. Reich was colour-blind and relied on Richter to read the spectroscope, which later led to a quarrel over credit when Richter claimed the discovery alone. Indium is softer than lead and leaves a mark on paper. Almost all of it now goes into indium tin oxide, the transparent conductor coating every touchscreen and flat panel, which makes an obscure nineteenth-century metal a bottleneck of modern manufacturing.

Overview

Indium was discovered in 1863 by the German chemists Ferdinand Reich and Hieronymus Theodor Richter, using flame spectroscopy on a zinc ore. They named it from the brilliant indigo-blue line it cast in the spectrum, indicum being the Latin for indigo. Indium is a very soft, silvery metal, so soft it can be scratched with a fingernail, and its transparent conducting oxide is now essential to flat-panel and touchscreen displays. Soft enough to leave a mark on paper, indium is used chiefly as indium tin oxide, the transparent conductor coating the screens of phones, tablets and televisions, and also in low-melting alloys, in solders and in some semiconductors and light-emitting diodes.

Bending a bar of pure indium produces the so-called indium cry, an audible high-pitched crackling caused by the twinning of its crystal structure as it deforms, a distinctive physical signature shared by only a few metals including tin. Because indium is recovered almost entirely as a byproduct of zinc refining rather than mined directly, supply cannot easily expand to meet demand, and the explosive growth of touchscreen devices since the 2000s has repeatedly strained the market and driven sharp price swings, placing indium on several governments' lists of critical or strategic minerals essential to modern electronics.

Named for a Colour of Light

Indium belongs to the family of elements first betrayed by their spectral colours, its name taken directly from the single deep indigo line that revealed it to Reich and Richter. It joins caesium (sky-blue), rubidium (deep red), thallium (green shoot) and its own indigo among the metals christened for the hue of the light they emit, a small poetry of the spectroscope. Indium has no ancient, mythological or alchemical tradition, having been discovered only in the 1860s; its identity is bound entirely to that flash of indigo and, in the modern world, to the invisible conducting film that makes the glowing screens of phones and monitors respond to a touch.

Indium's softness and low melting point give it a specialised role wherever an unusually gentle, reliable seal is needed: thin indium wire or foil is compressed between metal flanges to make ultra-high-vacuum seals in scientific instruments such as particle detectors and cryogenic equipment, since the soft metal flows into microscopic imperfections that harder materials cannot fill. Indium-based solders, prized for their low melting points and freedom from the more toxic elements once common in electronics assembly, remain a niche but important material in aerospace and precision instrument manufacturing where reliability outweighs cost.
