A textbook case of a disputed discovery. A team at the Nobel Institute in Stockholm claimed element 102 in 1957 and proposed the name; the result was later attributed to thorium contamination and withdrawn. Berkeley reported a different activity in 1958. The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research at Dubna produced the first complete and unambiguous identification in 1966, and in 1992 the international commission credited Dubna with the discovery. The Swedish name was kept anyway, because thirty years of published literature already used it.

Overview
Nobelium's discovery was one of the most disputed in the periodic table: claims were made in the late 1950s by teams in Stockholm, at Berkeley, and at Dubna in the Soviet Union, and the priority quarrel ran for years. The name, honouring Alfred Nobel, was proposed by the Stockholm group and, although their claim was not upheld, the name was eventually retained. Nobelium is an intensely radioactive synthetic metal, studied only in trace amounts. Its longest-lived isotope survives less than an hour, and it is produced only a few atoms at a time; remarkably, study of those atoms shows it strongly prefers a stable two-plus ion, unlike the other actinides, a sign of the growing influence of relativistic effects in the heaviest elements.
The 1997 international resolution that finally settled the naming disputes across this stretch of the table formally credited the Dubna laboratory with nobelium's actual discovery, even though the name honouring Alfred Nobel, proposed by the Stockholm team whose claim did not hold up, was kept in place regardless, an unusual split in which credit for discovery and credit for naming ended up resting with two different parties. Berkeley researchers had also produced convincing evidence of the element independently, adding a third claimant to a priority dispute that took decades to fully resolve.

Nobelium honours Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite whose fortune endowed the Nobel Prizes, a name proposed by the Swedish institute that first, if wrongly, claimed the element. The tangled history of who truly discovered element 102 became part of the wider Cold War rivalry over the heaviest elements, in which the Berkeley and Dubna laboratories contested claim after claim; unusually, the disputed name survived even though the disputed discovery did not, and international bodies chose to leave nobelium in place rather than reopen the quarrel.
Nobelium has no ancient or esoteric tradition, being a synthetic element of the twentieth century; its story is one of scientific nationalism and contested priority, with the peacemaking philanthropist Nobel lending his name to an element fought over across three countries. That relativistic preference arises because electrons orbiting so massive and highly charged a nucleus move at speeds approaching a significant fraction of the speed of light, altering their energy levels in ways ordinary chemistry, built on lighter and slower-moving atoms, never has to account for, a genuinely new regime of chemical behaviour that only opens up in the heaviest corners of the periodic table.
