The only lanthanide with no stable isotope, and effectively absent from the Earth: perhaps a few hundred grams exist in the entire crust at any moment, formed by rare spontaneous fission in uranium ore. It was the last of the rare earth gaps to be filled, identified in 1945 by Jacob Marinsky, Lawrence Glendenin and Charles Coryell in fission products at Oak Ridge and announced in 1947. Grace Mary Coryell proposed the name, after Prometheus who stole fire, as a deliberate comment on nuclear power. It has been used in luminous paint and in miniature nuclear batteries.

Overview

Promethium is the only rare earth with no stable isotope; it is radioactive and vanishingly rare in nature, and its existence was confirmed only in 1945, when Jacob Marinsky, Lawrence Glendenin and Charles Coryell identified it among the fission products of uranium at Oak Ridge. Long predicted as the missing element 61, it had eluded every search in ordinary minerals precisely because it decays away. It is used in luminous paint and in miniature nuclear batteries. With no stable form and produced only in reactors or extracted from fission waste, promethium has few uses beyond luminous paint for dials and instruments, thickness gauges, and experimental atomic batteries that draw power from its steady radioactive decay.

Element 61 had a long false-start history before its genuine identification: research teams in the 1920s announced illinium, claimed by chemists at the University of Illinois, and florentium, claimed by Italian researchers in Florence, but neither claim survived closer scrutiny, and both are now regarded as mistaken readings of contaminated spectra rather than real detections. The correct identification had to wait for the machinery of the nuclear age, since promethium's complete absence of any stable isotope means it can only be produced artificially or in the vanishingly small quantities generated by the spontaneous fission of uranium in ordinary rock.

Named for the Fire-Bringer

The name promethium was suggested by Grace Mary Coryell, wife of one of the discoverers, after Prometheus, the Titan of Greek myth who stole fire from the gods and gave it to humankind, and who was punished by Zeus with eternal torment for the gift. The choice was deliberate and pointed: the element had been wrested from the fission of uranium, the very process that had produced the atomic bomb, and Prometheus stood for both the promise and the peril of the fire that science had now stolen from the atom. Promethium thus carries one of the most consciously symbolic names in the periodic table, its mythological fire-theft made to speak for the dawning nuclear age.

By some accounts the name was proposed after Grace Mary Coryell challenged the discovery team, who had considered more conventional geographic options, to choose something that reflected the moral weight of what nuclear fission had just made possible, and Prometheus's story of stolen fire and its punishment fit that challenge more pointedly than any place name could have. At any given moment only about half a kilogram of promethium exists naturally in the whole of the Earth's crust, trace amounts produced by the spontaneous fission of uranium in ordinary rock and decaying away almost as fast as they form.
