The least abundant of the stable rare earths, named after Thule, the far northern land of classical geography. Per Teodor Cleve separated it at Uppsala in 1879. Its scarcity kept it a laboratory curiosity for most of a century. Thulium-170, made in a reactor, emits X-rays and is used in small portable radiography sources for inspecting welds and for medical work in the field, and thulium lasers operating around two micrometres are used in surgery because water absorbs that wavelength strongly. Even so it remains the rare earth with the fewest applications.

Overview
Thulium was discovered in 1879 by the Swedish chemist Per Teodor Cleve, who drew it from the residues of erbium ore. He named it after Thule, the name the ancient Greeks and Romans gave to the northernmost land at the edge of the known world. Thulium is the rarest of the stable rare-earth metals, soft and silvery, used in portable X-ray sources and in certain surgical lasers. Rare and expensive, thulium has few uses: a radioactive isotope powers small, portable X-ray machines, thulium-doped crystals form the lasers used in some surgery, and its faint blue fluorescence marks certain banknotes under ultraviolet light.
Aside from promethium, which barely exists in nature at all, thulium is among the least abundant of the naturally occurring lanthanides, though at roughly half a part per million it is still about a hundred times commoner in the crust than gold, and its price stays high despite its narrow range of uses. Compact thulium-170 X-ray units, self-contained and drawing on the isotope's own decay rather than any battery, were developed for military field medicine and industrial inspection work in remote locations during the twentieth century, valued precisely because they needed no external power source to generate usable radiation for imaging. Such portable units have since been largely displaced by digital and battery electronic X-ray sources, leaving thulium's isotope role a mostly historical footnote.
Named for the Edge of the World
Thulium's name reaches back to classical geography and legend. Thule, first reported by the Greek explorer Pytheas around 300 BCE, was the farthest north any traveller claimed to have sailed, a half-mythical island of the frozen sea beyond which lay only the unknown; the phrase Ultima Thule came to mean the uttermost limit, the last place before the end of the world.
Cleve, a Swede naming an element of the far north, invoked this ancient boundary of the imagined earth. Thulium has no alchemical or religious tradition, being a nineteenth-century rare-earth discovery, but its name carries a genuine strand of ancient myth-geography, planting at the edge of the periodic table the island that once marked the edge of the world. Pytheas's own account of Thule does not survive directly; it is known only through later writers such as Strabo and Pliny who quoted and disputed him, some doubting he had sailed so far north at all, so that Thule entered the European imagination already wrapped in a layer of scholarly argument about whether it was Norway, Iceland, the Shetlands or pure invention. That inherited uncertainty suited Cleve's purpose well enough: he needed only a name evocative of remoteness, not a settled geography, when he reached for it to mark an element drawn from the far northern quarries of his own Scandinavian homeland.
