The zircon crystal is the oldest solid thing so far identified on Earth: grains from the Jack Hills of Western Australia have been dated to about 4.4 billion years. Martin Heinrich Klaproth recognised a new element in zircon in 1789, and Jons Jacob Berzelius produced impure metal in 1824. Zirconium is nearly transparent to neutrons and resists corrosion, which makes it the standard cladding for nuclear fuel rods. Cubic zirconia, a synthetic oxide, is the commonest diamond substitute. The gemstone is ancient; the element is eighteenth-century and carries no tradition.

Zirconium was identified in 1789 by Martin Heinrich Klaproth, who recognised a new earth in the gemstone zircon; the impure metal was first isolated by Berzelius in 1824. The name comes from zircon, a stone whose own name passes through Arabic and ultimately from the Persian zargun, meaning gold-coloured. Zirconium is a strong, corrosion-resistant metal notable for its low absorption of neutrons, which makes it valuable for the cladding of nuclear fuel. Highly resistant to corrosion and nearly transparent to neutrons, zirconium is prized for the tubing that jackets nuclear fuel rods, and it is used in chemical-plant equipment, in tough ceramics, and, as cubic zirconia, as a widespread diamond simulant.

Zircon crystals are exceptionally durable and chemically resistant, which makes them one of geology's most valuable clocks: tiny zircon grains from the Jack Hills of Western Australia have been dated to more than 4.4 billion years old, among the oldest known materials on Earth's surface and a key piece of evidence for conditions in the planet's earliest history. Zirconium's chemical twin, hafnium, hides in the same ores and was not recognised as a separate element until 1923, since the two behave almost identically; even today commercial zirconium typically still carries a small residual fraction of hafnium unless specifically purified for nuclear use, where hafnium's neutron-absorbing behaviour would be a serious contaminant.

The Gemstone and Its Name

Zirconium reaches back through its parent stone into the ancient world of gems. Zircon, in its yellow, orange and brown varieties, was known to antiquity as jacinth or hyacinth and as jargoon, prized as a gem and credited in medieval lapidaries with the power to promote sleep and ward off evil, and its Persian-derived name, meaning gold-coloured, records that lore. The element itself has no alchemical or mythological identity, being an eighteenth-century discovery, but its symbolic inheritance flows from the gemstone. The colourless synthetic cubic zirconia, a zirconium compound, is today a familiar diamond simulant, extending the stone's long association with brilliance into the present.

Natural zircon and the synthetic cubic zirconia are frequently confused by jewellery buyers, but they are chemically distinct: zircon is a natural zirconium silicate gemstone mined in Sri Lanka, Cambodia and elsewhere, prized in its own right for brilliance and fire, while cubic zirconia is a laboratory-grown zirconium oxide manufactured specifically since the 1970s as an inexpensive diamond substitute. Some of the finest historic zircon gems, particularly colourless stones from Sri Lanka traded as Matara diamond, have at times been passed to unwary buyers as the real thing, while the familiar blue zircon is a twentieth century heat treatment and was never the imitation, so the same word-family confusion runs both backward into medieval gem lore and forward into the modern jewellery trade.
