Hellenic Polytheism (Hellenismos) Prayer Corpus and Revival Practice

Hellenismos, the modern revival of ancient Greek polytheistic religious practice, benefits from a considerably richer surviving historical source base than most other modern pagan revival movements catalogued in this atlas, since ancient Greek religion, discussed as its own separate historical corpus elsewhere in this atlas, left extensive literary, epigraphic and philosophical evidence, including hymns, ritual calendars and detailed philosophical discussion of religious practice by ancient authors themselves, giving contemporary Hellenic polytheist practitioners considerably more documented material to draw on than, for example, contemporary Slavic Rodnovery or Celtic Druidry can access for their respective ancestral traditions. This does not mean Hellenismos amounts to unbroken continuous practice, however, since ancient Greek religion as an organized, widely practiced tradition effectively ended with the Christianization of the late Roman Empire many centuries before its modern revival began, meaning contemporary Hellenismos, like other revival movements in this atlas, involves real reconstruction and interpretation of ancient sources by modern practitioners rather than unbroken transmission across the intervening centuries.

Contemporary Hellenismos has developed organized institutional presence particularly within Greece itself, where organizations such as Ellinais have sought and in some respects obtained formal legal recognition for Hellenic polytheist religious practice from the Greek state, a notable development given Greece's strong historical and continuing association with Orthodox Christianity as its dominant religious tradition, alongside related organizations and practitioner communities in North America, the United Kingdom and elsewhere internationally who draw on the same ancient Greek source material with varying degrees of emphasis on historical reconstruction versus contemporary spiritual adaptation.

Because the surviving ancient Greek prayer corpus itself, as discussed in its own dedicated entry in this atlas, already contains considerable internal diversity across different city-states, periods and cult traditions, modern Hellenismos organizations similarly differ among themselves in exactly which ancient sources, deities and specific practices they emphasize, meaning no single description of Hellenismos practice would accurately represent every contemporary Hellenic polytheist community. This entry accordingly records the movement's general character and its relationship to the ancient corpus rather than presenting any single organization's specific contemporary liturgical practice as representative of the whole.
