A near-death experience is a profound subjective event, often including a sense of leaving the body, moving through a tunnel toward light, encountering deceased relatives, or a life review, reported by some people who survive cardiac arrest or come close to death. Psychiatrist Raymond Moody named and popularised the pattern in 1975, and Dutch cardiologist Pim van Lommel brought it into clinical medicine with a prospective 2001 study in The Lancet that interviewed resuscitated cardiac arrest patients as soon as possible after their recovery, finding that about 18 percent recalled some memory from the period and about 12 percent described a core near-death experience. The largest attempt to test the most extraordinary claimed feature, that patients can accurately perceive real events from outside their body during a period of flat brain activity, was the multi-hospital AWARE study led by Sam Parnia, published in 2014, whose results did not establish reliable veridical out-of-body perception as a general finding, though the underlying subjective experiences themselves are not in dispute as real events reported in good faith.

Naming a Pattern: Moody, van Lommel, and the Clinical Study of NDEs
Reports of vivid experiences during near-death states appear throughout religious and folk literature long before modern medicine, but the pattern was named and popularised for a general audience by psychiatrist Raymond Moody, whose 1975 book Life After Life collected first-person accounts sharing recurring elements: a sense of separating from the physical body, moving through darkness or a tunnel toward a light, meeting deceased relatives or a being of light, a rapid review of one's life, and a reluctant return. Moody's book was a popular rather than a clinical study, but it set the template later researchers tested formally.

AWARE and the Unresolved Question of Veridical Perception
The most direct test of the near-death experience's most extraordinary claim, that some patients perceive real, verifiable events from a vantage point outside their body during a period when the brain should not be capable of forming or storing memories, was the AWARE study (AWAreness during REsuscitation), a multi-hospital project led by critical care physician Sam Parnia and published in the journal Resuscitation in 2014. The study placed hidden visual targets, images visible only from a vantage point near the ceiling, in resuscitation areas across participating hospitals, reasoning that a patient who genuinely left their body and looked down would be able to report the target after recovery. Very few of the surviving patients who reported any near-death experience also reported an out-of-body component specific enough to test, and none of the placed visual targets were reported correctly, though Parnia noted one case in which a patient described real events during the resuscitation with apparent accuracy through means the study could not fully rule out or confirm, a single, methodologically contested data point rather than a systematic finding.
Critics, including cognitive neuroscientists who reviewed van Lommel's study, argue that "flat" brain activity during cardiac arrest is measured too coarsely to rule out brief bursts of neural activity, and that anoxia, surging neurochemicals, and after-the-fact memory reconstruction offer plausible physiological accounts without requiring consciousness to operate independently of the brain. The subjective reality of near-death experiences is not disputed; whether they show consciousness surviving apart from brain function remains an open, contested question.
