The Atal Akhara is a Shaivite monastic order affiliated with the Mahanirvani Akhara as a subsidiary, and is counted among the oldest of the akharas taking part in the Kumbh Mela. Its headquarters is in Varanasi, its ascetics worship Ganesha, and initiation into the order is traditionally restricted to men of the Brahmin, Kshatriya and Vaishya varnas. The Atal Akhara conducts the ordination of Naga sadhus during the second royal bathing procession, or Shahi Snan, of the Kumbh Mela.
