The Bon Secours Sisters, formally the Congregation of the Sisters of Bon Secours, are an international Roman Catholic women's religious congregation founded around 1824 in Paris, France, by Josephine Potel, dedicated to nursing and caring for the sick and dying; their name means good help in French, and their motto is Good Help to Those in Need. Pope Pius IX formally approved the congregation in 1875, and it expanded to Ireland in 1861, England in 1870, the United States in 1881 and Scotland in 1948, going on to operate hospitals, clinics and other healthcare facilities across several continents from its international headquarters in Marriottsville, Maryland. The congregation's history includes running the Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, Ireland, from 1925 to 1961, a period marked by significant child mortality and improper burial practices later subject to public inquiry; in 2019 the congregation's American ministries merged with Mercy Health to form Bon Secours Mercy Health, a major Catholic health system serving more than 10.5 million people.
