Origin from 1665
The Bonalists, also known as the Congregation of the Priests of St. Mary, were a defunct French Catholic priestly congregation established by the theologian Raymond Bonal. The congregation received papal approval from Pope Alexander VII in 1665 and royal endorsement from King Louis XIV in 1678, and it operated several seminaries. Enrollment gradually declined: the Villefranche seminary transferred to the Lazarists in 1723 and the Toulouse seminary followed in 1752, and the Lazarists eventually absorbed the entire congregation.
