Origin from 1975
The Community of Saint John is a French Catholic religious family comprising three congregations, the Brothers of Saint John, the Apostolic Sisters of Saint John and the Contemplative Sisters of Saint John, along with lay oblates, founded by the Dominican priest Marie-Dominique Philippe, who established the Brothers in 1975, the Contemplative Sisters in 1982 and the Apostolic Sisters in 1984. Headquartered at Rimont in Fley, France, with priories in 21 countries, the community draws heavily on the writings of John the Evangelist and structures its life around prayer, apostolic work and the study of philosophy and theology under the traditional vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, while also running retreats and sessions for young people and families. As of 2005 it counted about 930 professed members and more than 3,000 oblates across 91 priories.
