Origin from 1985
The Companions of the Cross is a Catholic society of apostolic life of diocesan right for men based in Ottawa, Ontario, founded by Father Robert Bedard in May 1985 out of an informal prayer group for seminarians and priests that had begun the previous year, and formally recognized by the Vatican as a society of apostolic life in 2003. It emphasizes Eucharistic devotion, charismatic prayer and Marian spirituality within Church teaching, and its members live in community while serving as parish pastors, teachers, chaplains and evangelists with a particular focus on youth and the economically disadvantaged; as of May 2025 it had 65 members, including 52 priests, under General Superior Father Simon Lobo, with foundations in five cities, Ottawa, Toronto, Halifax, Houston and Detroit, serving 15 parishes and university chaplaincies.
