The Congregation of Holy Cross is a Catholic clerical religious congregation of pontifical right for men, founded in Le Mans, France, in 1837 by Basil Moreau, who united two existing communities, the Auxiliary Priests formed in 1835 and the Brothers of St. Joseph established in 1820, into the Association of Holy Cross on 1 March 1837; Pope Pius IX approved its constitutions and it became the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1857. As of 2020 the congregation comprised about 1,399 members, including 729 priests, under the motto Ave Crux Spes Unica, Hail the Cross, Our Only Hope. Moreau also founded related communities of women, now three independent congregations of sisters, and the congregation operates schools, parishes and missions with a significant presence in the United States, India, Bangladesh and Africa.
