The Legionaries of Christ is a Roman Catholic religious congregation of pontifical right, established on 3 January 1941 in Mexico City by the Mexican priest Marcial Maciel, initially as the Apostolic Missionary Mission of the Sacred Heart of Jesus operating within the Diocesan Seminary of Cuernavaca with the approval of Bishop Francisco Gonzalez Arias and Archbishop Luis Maria Martinez. The congregation established its first novitiate house on 25 March 1946, marking what is described as a foundation in fact ahead of formal Vatican recognition, and belongs to the wider spiritual family of Regnum Christi alongside the Consecrated Women of Regnum Christi and the Lay Consecrated Men of Regnum Christi. As of 2023 the congregation comprised about 1,700 members, including around 1,000 priests, headquartered in Rome and engaged in education, pastoral work, evangelization and charitable ministries.
