The Muslim Brotherhood is a transnational Sunni Islamist organization founded in Ismailia, Egypt, in 1928 by the Islamic scholar and schoolteacher Hassan al-Banna. It began as a pan-Islamist, religious and social movement whose members carried out religious education, ran hospitals and other social services, and pursued business ventures, with the aim of establishing a state ruled by sharia under a caliphate, summarized in the slogan Islam is the solution. Despite repeated government crackdowns beginning in 1948, it remains one of Egypt's largest organizations, and al-Banna's teachings went on to influence Islamist movements across many Muslim-majority countries. The Brotherhood gained significant political power after Egypt's 2011 revolution, winning elections that placed Mohamed Morsi in the presidency before he was removed in a 2013 military coup, and several countries have since designated the Brotherhood or its branches a terrorist organization.
