The Order of Montesa was founded in 1317 by King James II of Aragon, with papal approval granted by Pope John XXII on 10 June that year, headquartered at the castle of Montesa in the Crown of Aragon. It was created to defend the frontier against Moors and pirates, regrouping property left by the dissolved Knights Templar in Aragon and Valencia and drawing many of its initial recruits from former Templars, and it received the Cistercian rule while being dedicated to Our Lady. Today it functions as a Religious Order of Honour rather than an active military force, with King Felipe VI as Sovereign, holding precedence alongside Spain's other chivalric orders such as Santiago and Calatrava.
