The Order of Saint Lazarus was established around 1130 in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, growing out of a leper hospital founded by Crusaders, with no single founder identified. A Catholic military-religious order, it was uniquely devoted to caring for people afflicted with leprosy alongside its military role, and received papal recognition as a hospitaller and military order of chivalry in 1255. Its Italian branch merged in 1572 into the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, still active today under the House of Savoy, while its French branch ceased operating around 1830; neither continuation carries official Vatican recognition, though the Savoyard order remains an active dynastic institution.
