The Order of Santiago was founded in 1170 out of religious communities in Leon and Castile, with Pedro Fernandez de Castro as its first Grand Master and a rule provided by Cardinal Jacinto in 1171, eventually headquartered at Ucles in Castile. A Catholic military-religious order, it was dedicated to protecting pilgrims on the Way of St James and to defending Christendom during the Reconquista, and uniquely among the major Iberian military orders permitted its members to marry from its founding. Suppressed during Spain's First and Second Republics, it was restored under King Juan Carlos I and continues today as a nobiliary, honourable and religious order under King Felipe VI as Sovereign, counting 35 knights and 30 novices as of 2014.
