The Servite Order, officially the Order of Servants of Mary, is one of the five original mendicant orders of the Catholic Church, established in 1233 by seven wealthy Florentine merchants who abandoned their families and businesses to pursue lives of poverty and spiritual devotion on Monte Senario, a mountain outside Florence. The seven founders, Bonfilius Monaldi, Alexis Falconieri, Benedict dell'Antella, Bartholemew Amidei, Ricovero Uguccioni, Gerardino Sostegni and Giovanni Manetti, dedicated themselves to honoring Mary under her title Mother of Sorrows, and were canonized together by Pope Leo XIII on 15 January 1888. The order today comprises friars, contemplative nuns, religious sisters and lay groups, with headquarters at San Marcello al Corso in Rome.
