The Society of King Charles the Martyr is an Anglican devotional society founded in 1894 out of a Tractarian reaction to the 1859 removal of certain religious observances from the Church of England calendar. It exists for intercessory prayer for the defence of the Church of England and commemorates Charles I of England, executed in 1649, whose death High Church supporters regarded as a martyrdom because he refused Puritan demands to abolish episcopacy in the Church. The society promotes observance of the feast of St Charles on 30 January, the date of his execution, campaigns for its reinstatement in liturgical calendars, and supports the building of churches dedicated to him, with active membership in England, the Scottish Episcopal Church, North America and elsewhere.
