The Society of Ordained Scientists is an international, ecumenical Anglican-affiliated religious order founded in 1986 by biologist-theologian Arthur Peacocke at the University of Oxford to advance the field of religion and science, following the emergence of similar organizations in the 1970s exploring the intersection of theological and scientific inquiry. Its dispersed membership consists of ordained clergy who are also trained scientists, drawn not only from the Anglican Church but from Catholic, Methodist, Eastern Orthodox, Reformed and Lutheran traditions, provided they affirm Trinitarian Christian belief. By 1990 the society had attracted 55 full members representing multiple nationalities and denominations.
