The Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross is an Episcopal and Anglican organization founded in 1884 by Emily Malbone Morgan, a social and religious leader in the Episcopal Church, dedicated to women seeking spiritual community through vows of prayer, service and fellowship. It is headquartered at the Adelynrood Retreat and Conference Center in Byfield, Massachusetts, and has expanded from its original Episcopal membership to include female clergy and lay women from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Moravian Church, with chapters across the United States and India plus a Far and Near Chapter for members living elsewhere. Operating today as a public charity, its past companions have included the author Madeleine L'Engle and the activist Vida Dutton Scudder.
