The Theatines, formally the Congregation of Clerics Regular, are a Catholic order of clerics regular of pontifical right for men, founded on 14 September 1524 under papal authorization from Pope Clement VII. The founders were Saint Cajetan, born Gaetano dei Conti di Thiene, and Archbishop Gian Pietro Carafa, who later became Pope Paul IV, along with Paolo Consiglieri and Bonifacio da Colle. The order's name derives from Chieti, the Abruzzi city where Carafa served as bishop, and its mission combined religious contemplation with active pastoral ministry aimed at reforming and restoring the clergy on the model of the life of the Apostles, prohibiting both property ownership and the solicitation of alms. As of 2020 the order comprised 161 members, including 124 priests, with headquarters at Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rome.
