A gilded copper fragment from a morse, the clasp that fastened a liturgical cope, titled "Morse Fragment with the Archangel Gabriel," French work of about 1250. Gabriel is the messenger archangel of the Annunciation, sent to tell Mary she would bear a son, and appears across the Christian tradition as the herald of divine announcement. Held today by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Medieval Art department, under accession 1999.520.
