An oil and gold panel painting titled "The Mass of Saint Gregory," by a Spanish painter, ca. 1485 to 1495. The painting shows the legend in which Pope Gregory the Great, celebrating Mass while an onlooker doubted the Real Presence, saw Christ as the Man of Sorrows appear above the altar, a subject attached exclusively to Gregory in Christian iconography. Held today by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, European Paintings, under accession 1976.100.24.
