Alessandro Alessandri (1391 to 1460), a Florentine merchant and office holder in the city's government, commissioned the panel and appears kneeling with his two sons in the foreground; some scholars connect it instead to a 1453 marriage gift for his daughter Ginevra degli Alessandri, though the mid-1440s dating for the commission itself is more commonly favored. 1
