Saint John on Patmos (Pacino di Bonaguida, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 64.189.3ab)

Christian Art

A tempera and gold ground panel, one wing of a small devotional diptych, showing John the Evangelist seated on the island of Patmos, his traditional place of exile and the setting in which tradition holds he received the visions of the Book of Revelation. Painted by the Florentine artist Pacino di Bonaguida, active 1302 to circa 1340, in the early fourteenth century. Held today by the Metropolitan Museum of Art under accession 64.189.3ab, a gift of Irma N. Straus in 1964.

Facts
Subject Matter
Devotional Function
Pacino di Bonaguida was among the leading manuscript illuminators and panel painters working in Florence in the generation after Giotto, in the early fourteenth century. A panel of this size and format would originally have formed one wing of a small portable diptych, hinged to a facing scene, most often a Crucifixion or a Madonna and Child, made for an individual owner's private prayer rather than for display in a church. 1
