Genealogy traces documented family descent through records of birth, marriage and death, testing each generational link against the surviving documentary record rather than accepting an inherited family tradition at face value. The field gained its first dedicated scholarly body in England in 1911, when the Society of Genealogists was founded in London as an educational charity to promote the study, science and knowledge of genealogy, giving family history research a professional standard of source citation and record verification distinct from casual antiquarian pedigree collecting.

A claimed descent from a religious founder, a prophet's bloodline, a dynasty's sacred lineage, a saint's family, is exactly the kind of assertion genealogy's documentary method can test, checking whether the birth, marriage and death records that would have to exist for the claim to hold actually survive and actually connect the generations named. The atlas relies on the discipline wherever a lineage claim carries religious weight, distinguishing a descent line that the surviving record actually supports from one that rests on assertion, later invention or a gap the documentary trail cannot close. A missing link in the chain is reported as a missing link rather than papered over with the assumption that a later generation's claim must be accurate.
