Rasmus Rask's Grammar Opens the Sagas to Systematic Reading

Old Norse philology studies the language of the medieval Icelandic sagas, the Poetic and Prose Eddas and skaldic verse, establishing reliable grammar and vocabulary through comparison with related Germanic languages so that these texts, the principal written source for pre Christian Norse mythology, can be read with philological rigor rather than through paraphrase or translation alone. The Danish linguist Rasmus Rask laid the discipline's foundation with his 1811 grammar of Old Norse (published as a grammar of Icelandic), one of the earliest systematic grammars of any Germanic language and a work that also fed directly into Rask's broader comparative reconstruction of the Indo-European language family.

Almost everything popularly known about Norse mythology, the gods, Ragnarok, the world tree Yggdrasil, comes from Old Norse texts written down in Iceland two to three centuries after Christianization, by Christian authors describing a pagan religious system they no longer practiced. Old Norse philology is what lets the atlas read those texts critically, distinguishing likely pre-Christian material from Christian era literary framing and later medieval invention, rather than treating the sagas and eddas as a transparent window onto pagan belief.
