Miriam Lichtheim's Ancient Egyptian Literature, Volume I, The Old and Middle Kingdoms, published by the University of California Press in 1973, is the first volume of Lichtheim's standard three-volume scholarly anthology of ancient Egyptian texts in translation, including the Didactic Literature section carrying The Instruction of Ptahhotep, attributed in the ancient sources to the vizier under King Djedkare Isesi of the Fifth Dynasty. Lichtheim was a leading Egyptologist and translator, and the anthology's authority rests on standard university press peer review and her direct philological work from the hieroglyphic originals. This volume specifically covers Old and Middle Kingdom material; its companion Volume II covers the New Kingdom separately and should not be conflated with it.

Reliability Tier1
Tier one: the first volume of a standard three volume scholarly anthology of ancient Egyptian texts in translation from the University of California Press, by a leading Egyptologist working directly from the hieroglyphic originals, resting on standard university press peer review. Its limit is that this volume covers Old and Middle Kingdom material only; its companion Volume II covers the New Kingdom separately and should not be conflated with it. NotesFirst volume of Lichtheim's standard three-volume anthology, covering Old and Middle Kingdom literature including the Didactic Literature section that carries The Instruction of Ptahhotep, attributed to the vizier under King Djedkare Isesi of the Fifth Dynasty. Companion to the already-catalogued Volume II, The New Kingdom; this citation exists specifically because Ptahhotep, an Old Kingdom text, had been mis-cited to that later volume.
