Chad Bauman's academic study examines the pattern of anti-Christian violence across contemporary India, arguing that Pentecostal and independent evangelical Christians are disproportionately targeted because of their assertive evangelism and their social marginality relative to older, established Christian denominations. Bauman, a scholar of religion at Butler University, draws on interviews, fieldwork and a wide scholarly literature on Hindu nationalism and discusses the Kandhamal riots of 2007 and 2008 as its central case study of large-scale communal violence against Christians.
