T. W. Rhys Davids was a pioneering scholar of Pali Buddhism, and this volume, originally published by Clarendon Press in 1881 as part of Max Muller's Sacred Books of the East series and now hosted online by the Internet Sacred Text Archive, is his standard early scholarly translation of a selection of early Pali Buddhist suttas. Its historical importance is real, it was among the first scholarly renderings of these texts into English and helped establish serious academic Buddhist studies in the West. Its limit is its age, Rhys Davids's Victorian era translation choices and some of his specific readings have been superseded by more recent Pali scholarship, so a claim needing precise or current textual accuracy should be checked against a modern critical translation alongside this historically significant early one.
