Near-Death Experience in Survivors of Cardiac Arrest, A Prospective Study in the Netherlands, by Pim van Lommel, Ruud van Wees, Vincent Meyers and Ingrid Elfferich, published in The Lancet in 2001, is a peer reviewed prospective study following 344 cardiac arrest patients across Dutch hospitals, finding that roughly eighteen percent reported a near death experience and that its depth did not correlate with duration of clinical unconsciousness or medication, a finding the authors argue is hard to explain by physiological brain activity alone. Its strength is genuine prospective, peer reviewed method in one of medicine's most respected journals, a real advance over the retrospective, self-selected samples much earlier near death experience research relied on. Its limit is that the study's interpretation, that consciousness may function independently of brain activity during the episode, is not the only reading of its own data and remains actively disputed by researchers who propose physiological explanations the design cannot fully rule out, so it documents a real, replicated finding whose ultimate explanation stays genuinely contested.
