The full text of George Bernard Shaw's own preface to Major Barbara, "First Aid to Critics," hosted by Project Gutenberg. Contains a section titled "The Salvation Army" that directly quotes an actual Salvation Army officer stating the Army "would take money from the devil himself and be only too glad to get it out of his hands and into God's," and argues at length that refusing money on grounds of its tainted origin is impractical, since, in Shaw's own words, "practically all the spare money in the country consists of a mass of rent, interest, and profit, every penny of which is bound up with crime, drink, prostitution, disease."
