Wyatt MacGaffey is an anthropologist specializing in Kongo studies, and this academic book, published by University of Chicago Press, examines BaKongo religion in the lower Zaire region, including cosmology, ritual specialists and the movements of religious renewal that periodically swept the region, based on MacGaffey's own extended fieldwork. Its strength is deep, long term direct engagement with Kongo religious thought on its own conceptual terms, rather than translating it too quickly into Western categories. Its limit is that it documents the specific Kongo communities MacGaffey studied in a particular period, and Kongo religious practice, like other living traditions, continues to vary and change across different communities and in the years since, so more current or geographically different practice needs separate sources.
