Report on the Census of Hallucinations

The Report on the Census of Hallucinations is a large scale survey conducted by Henry Sidgwick, Eleanor Sidgwick, Frederic W. H. Myers, Frank Podmore and Alice Johnson under the Society for Psychical Research, published in the Society's own Proceedings in 1894, surveying roughly seventeen thousand respondents between 1889 and 1894 about waking apparition experiences. Its strength is scale and method for its era, a coordinated, multi investigator survey of this size was genuinely unusual for late Victorian psychical research, and the Society's Proceedings applied real editorial scrutiny before publication. Its limit is the inherent one for any survey of self reported subjective experience collected well over a century ago, it documents what respondents said they experienced, not an independently verified explanation of what caused those experiences.
