Shulchan Aruch

Joseph Karo's sixteenth century code of Jewish law, traditionally printed together with the glosses of Moses Isserles that adapt it for Ashkenazi practice, remaining the standard code of Jewish law across much of Orthodox Judaism to the present. As the primary legal text itself it sits at this atlas's top tier, meaning it authoritatively records what the code states, not independent confirmation of how it is applied by any particular community today. Use it to establish what the code's actual rulings say. Its application varies by community and by later rabbinic commentary building on it, and a claim about a specific community's current practice needs a source on that community directly.
