The Great Arab Conquests: How the Spread of Islam Changed the World We Live In

Hugh Kennedy's narrative history of the early Arab conquests, from the first campaigns out of Arabia through the establishment of Umayyad rule across the Near East and North Africa into Iberia. Kennedy is a professor of Arabic at SOAS, University of London, and the book works from the same documented chronicle tradition as his other narrative history in this catalog on the Islamic Near East, extended here to the conquest of Iberia specifically. Use it for the established sequence and dating of the Umayyad conquest of the Iberian peninsula; a claim about later Andalusi cultural or intellectual history needs a dedicated source instead.
