D. Michael Quinn's The Mormon Hierarchy, Extensions of Power, published by Signature Books in 1997, is a documentary study of the governance, finances and internal politics of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1844 onward, covering the church's leadership succession, the composition of its Quorum of the Twelve and the post-Manifesto continuation of plural marriage. Quinn was a professionally trained historian and a former Brigham Young University faculty member who was excommunicated by the church in 1993, and the church itself disputes his framing on a number of points covered in the book.
