The Prose Edda

The Prose Edda is Snorri Sturluson's own thirteenth century primary handbook of Norse mythology and poetics, cited here in a 1916 English translation. As a primary text it is authoritative for what Snorri himself recorded about Norse myth and poetic technique, written centuries after Scandinavia's conversion to Christianity, a real gap between the text and the pre-Christian practice it describes that this atlas states plainly. A claim resting on how faithfully Snorri's account reflects earlier pre-Christian belief, as opposed to his own thirteenth century literary framing of it, needs a dedicated scholarly source addressing that specific gap.
