The Tamil Veda: Pillan's Interpretation of the Tiruvaymoli

The Tamil Veda: Pillan's Interpretation of the Tiruvaymoli, John Carman and Vasudha Narayanan's 1989 study from the University of Chicago Press, is a scholarly translation and study of a Srivaisnava commentary by two established scholars of South Asian religion with direct command of the Tamil source text. Its strength is that direct textual and commentarial command. Its limit is that it focuses on one specific commentary within a much larger devotional literature; broader claims about the Tamil Veda tradition as a whole should draw on wider scholarship as well.
