The Trew Law of Free Monarchies

King James VI and I's The Trew Law of Free Monarchies, Robert Waldegrave, 1598, is a primary political text, a reigning monarch's own treatise on the divine right of kings. Its strength is that it is the king's own statement of the doctrine in his own words, written before he took the English throne. Its limit is the ordinary one for a ruler's own political argument: it makes a case for his own authority rather than offering an independent or neutral account of the doctrine's development.
