United States v. Sioux Nation of Indians is the 1980 United States Supreme Court decision holding that the federal government's 1877 seizure of the Black Hills from the Lakota violated the Fifth Amendment and awarding monetary compensation with interest. As the Court's own official opinion it is the correct primary legal source for what the ruling actually held, in the Court's own reasoning, rather than a secondhand summary. Its limit is that it documents only the legal and monetary resolution the Court reached, the award the Lakota have consistently declined to accept, seeking return of the land itself rather than payment. A claim about the Lakota's own continuing position on the Black Hills, as distinct from the Court's ruling, needs a source representing that ongoing position directly.
