The State Of Israel Is Founded

The Israeli Declaration of Independence was proclaimed at the Tel Aviv Museum on 14 May 1948, the fifth of Iyar 5708 by the Hebrew calendar. The new state came into effect at midnight that same night, the exact moment at which the British Mandate for Palestine came to its end, so that the declared sovereignty began the instant the Mandate's own authority expired rather than after any gap between the two.

The timing carried its own weight beyond the calendar. The declaration came barely three years after the Holocaust had destroyed the world's largest Jewish community, close enough that the two events sat inside a single living generation. It also re-established Jewish sovereignty in the land Cyrus the Great had permitted a return to nearly twenty five centuries before, so that the sovereignty proclaimed at the Tel Aviv Museum reached back, across that entire span, to its nearest earlier precedent.

What this changed for Judaism's spread was the creation of a sovereign Jewish state for the first time in the tradition's modern history, arriving so soon after the near destruction of European Jewry that the two events belonged to the same generation rather than to different eras. Israel has since become home to the largest single Jewish population anywhere in the world, a status the Tel Aviv declaration made possible from the moment the British Mandate's own authority lapsed at midnight on 14 May 1948.
